Favorite Baseball Movies

I was scrolling through my Twitter feed the other day and came across a tweet claiming to list the top 5 baseball movies of all time. Of course their list is not the same as my list, but it started me thinking about what qualifies a movie to be one of the “best of all time.”  For me the first criteria is that I will sit down and watch the movie every time it’s on regardless of the number of times I have seen it already. The second criteria for my “best of all time” list is that quotes from the movie can be used daily in many situations, and my final criteria for adding a movie to this list is that the movie is referenced frequently in television shows and/or other movies. Here are a few movies that have made my list:

  • Bull Durham – I can’t even begin to count how many times I’ve seen this movie but I will absolutely stop channel surfing and watch any time it’s on. Bull Durham has been mentioned or quoted in several movies and television shows which include: Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, Gilmore Girls, Suits, and How to Get Away with Murder. Some of my favorite quotes from this movie are:
    • “What’s he know about fun? I’m young, I know about fun. He’s an old man, he don’ know nuthin’ about fun.”
    • “What’s our record Larry? Eight and sixteen. Eight … and sixteen. How’d we ever win eight? It’s a miracle. It’s a miracle.”
    • “I want to give him the heat and announce my presence with authority!”
  • Sandlot – who doesn’t love Sandlot?! One of the most recent nods to this movie is a commercial with kids playing baseball where a boy hits the ball through someone’s window. The kids are even dressed like the kids in Sandlot. There are so many quotes, but here are just a few of my favorites:
    • “You’re killing me, Smalls!”
    • “Remember kid, there’s heroes and there’s legends. Heroes get remembers but legends never die.”
    • “I don’t know. Some lady gave it to him. She even signed her name on it. Some lady named … Ruth. Baby Ruth.”
  • A League of Their Own – This movie has to be on everyone’s list of all-time greats! I can’t even begin to list the times quotes from this movie appear in other movies and television shows. I know you’ll recognize these quotes even if you haven’t seen the movie (which is a total shame and you should absolutely make the time to watch it soon!):
    • “There’s no crying! There’s no crying in baseball!”
    • “It’s supposed to be hard. If it wasn’t hard, everyone would do it.”

There are more movies I could include on my list, but these are definitely some of the best. If you have not seen any of these movies, I highly recommend adding them to your watch list. You may decide your favorite quotes are different from mine so keep a list and let’s talk about them at Crown!
